vicious pit bull attack. and looking beyond the surface of the jobless numbers finding signs of hope for the bay area . it is friday january 21st, -- gasia is off tonight. welcome to bay area news at 7:00. we start with breaking news just in. involving a homicide in the south bay. the police are on the sweep of a deadly shooting in san jose. it happened at story road and east capitol expressway. chopper 2 is live over the scene right now. we are seeing what appears to be police officers coming in and out of that building. now, the police tell us they got the calls just before 5:00

and arrived to find a man who was shot multiple times. he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. the victim appears to be between 18 and 20 years old. there is no word if there are any suspects at this time. the authorities closed off story road from east capitol expressway to galahn avenue and asking driver to avoid that area. we will continue to check in on the investigation there in san -- san jose and continue to bring them to you. other breaking news, any minute now another car may be pulled from the canal. that canal is the one that they have been searching for the past few days as they are searching for a 4-year-old boy. that canal is not far from the town of patterson. divers using sonar located another vehicle and there it is right there. they locate today in the waters of the delta mindota canal.

that is a few miles from where 4-year-old juliani was kidnapped. they are trying to pull out the car right now. they are trying to see if this vehicle is the one that matches the suspect vehicle. that vehicle was a silver toyota corolla. a farmworker spotted the vehicle going into this canal. we are just now learning that the investigators there on the scene are telling our reporter that this is not the vehicle that has been linked to the missing 4-year-old. but we will, of course, be following this and go back to that canal to see whatever happens there as soon as we get more details. now we are learning this car unrelated to the case of the missing 4-year-old from the central valley town of patterson. moving on to other news tonight. new numbers out tonight show california's jobless rate has

inched higher. the state unemployment rate hitting 12.5% in december. that means it remained above 12% for all of 2010. meantime, the national unemployment rate actually decreased in december falling to 9.4%. jana katsuomi is talking to people who see a silver lining for the bay area, jana? >> reporter: that is right. the state surveyy shows areas such as construction, trade and utilities have lost jobs where others as professionals, financial services, health services are on the rise. >> four years old. this is our oldest one here. >> reporter: keith says right now he does not have the means to support his wife and four children. >> every time i come up here i find 30 jobs a day. fills out resumes. >> reporter: he is looking for work after being laid off six months ago just as his wife lost her job, too. >> it is hard on everybody. it is really pretty hard.

one person supporting the whole family is hard. hard for him and others looking in the office today. one in eight california workers is without a job. in the bay area solono contra costa has the highest unemployment. and marin has the lowest. things are getting better. >> we seen an uptick in the amount of job requests in the marketplace today. >> reporter: david napp works at a job place want firm. they should phobe us on sectors with growing demand. >> health care, technology, legal services as well as education and nonprofit. >> i have been working for tech nickal work in a month. >> reporter: he found a job in computer system consulting after four weeks of searching. >> it seems better than last year. >> reporter: and overall california gained 87,000 jobs during the past year. most in the past three months.

the detectives say it shows good momentum going into this new year. live in oakland, ktvu channel 2 news. federal investigators today released the first in a series of factule reports about the san bruno pipeline explosion. experts say it points to the defective wells in the pipeline construction, they conceded it was unaware the pipe had wells. the ntsb report was prepared for hearings coming up in march and concentrates on the mack up of the metal pipe and the damage caused. it does not contain analysis or conclusion. jackie spear is critical of pg&e's role in the explosion and released this statement today quote in 54 years pg&e never once inspected the condition of the wells. a loss of life might have not

happened if they did this. click on the link under the san bruno tab at ktvu.com for more. the west contra costa county school district agreed to pay $4 million to the victim of the gang rape at richmond high school. authorities are prosecuting a group of men and boys for the october 2009 attack outside of a homecoming dance on the school campus. the rape victim will receive a payment of $2.5 million and an additional $1.5 million will be paid out at a structured settlement over the next four years. six people have been ordered to stand trial in that case. a story ktvu first uncovered yesterday that second graders allegedly engaged in a sexual act at an oakland school may lead to other investigations. the officials say two second graders allegedly engage inside oral sex in a classroom last week. district officials say the teacher is on administrative leave during the investigation. we have since received reports of inappropriate behavior at

other bay area schools. we are following up on those reports. a union city boy is on the mend tonight after he was viciously attacked by three pit bulls. as robert honda reports his father fought off the dogs first with his bear hand and then with a 2x4. >> reporter: 4-year-old miguel is at home recovering from deep painful dog bites all over his body after been mauled by three pit bulls in a neighbor's backyard. >> we were playing around the corner. >> reporter: his father told us how the attack took place last sunday. he used planters to climb over a fence to get a ball and the pit bulls are chasing them. >> miguel, where are you at. daddy, dogs are trying to eat me. >> what was the first thing that you saw? >> i saw miguel on the floor, pit bull, three of them on top of them. one of them -- this is in midair. i am jumping over. one has his head in the mouth

and the other in the legs and the third one is trying to come up. >> reporter: he kept hitting the dogs with the fist and then picked up a boad enplank. >> once i hit him with that oh man he was shaking his head he could -- the dog was standing his head for a good few seconds. gosh finally something that works. i just started going nuts with the piece of wood. i got him. >> reporter: the dogs owner points out they were in his backyard and told us he wants to get the dogs back. he doll whatever he can to make sure that does not happen. >> they smell him again i don't know what will happen. i can not have it. >> i can not have the dogs living next to me. not anymore. >> reporter: for now they will remain here for 10 days to check for rabies while the police investigation continues. in fremont, robert hopbd aktvu channel 2 news -- robert honda, ktvu channel 2 news. a body was found in a

jason giambi can be asked about his relationship against their trainer. he refuses to testify against bond who's has been his friend since childhood. >> he believes the jury will be just and fair and he will be judged on the evidence that is all anyone can want. >> bonds pled not guilty to 10 counts of perjury. prosecutors say bonds lied when he never knowingly took steroids. the trial is scheduled to begin in march. the chp is investigating threats against jerry brown. they are taking it seriously in the wake of the tuscon shooting. the investigators are trying to find out the source of the threatening graffiti that appeared yesterday in the city of santa ana and orange county. one including a swastika and a countdown threatening to kill the governor on valentine's day. they suggested the graffiti may be the work of white

supremacist. governor gifford is spending her first night in a rehabilitation center. giffords could hear the applause and smiled. tomorrow will mark two weeks since the 40-year-old congresswoman was shot in the head point blank while meeting in tuscon. today, doctors at houston memorial hermann institute calls her perfect for rehab. her arizona medical team said it was difficult to say good- bye. >> you want me to cry. [ laughter ] >> it is very emotional. i am going to misher a lot. she is a very gentle person and her personality is coming out with her touches, the way that she touches us, the way that she looks at us and i am very lucky to know her. and know her family.

in the car? >> you are listening to a live news conference near the canal that is not far from the town of patterson. that is, of course, where a little 4-year-old boy has been missing. he was abducted from his home there in patterson. let's take a listen to see what investigators are telling bus a car that was just pull friday that canal. we learn today is unrelated to this case. it was a honda that was reported stolen in august. another stolen vehicle pulled from this canal. but let's take a listen to what the investigators are telling us about the latest in the case? any confirmed sightings. this being the most reliable tip. all of those factors still lead us to believe this is the most credible lead. that is why we are focusing a lot of resources and personnel to searching this canal. it does not mean we are not following up on all of the other tips and leads. we are absolutely still following up on tips. >> is tomorrow like the final search? >> that i do not know. that will be up to investigators to, you know f

couple of days ago. since then investigators have been combing that canal trying to find that vehicle. but, so far they just found a number of stolen cars unrelated to this case. of course, we will be following this for you. having much more for you on ktvu channel 2 news on the 10:00 news. on other news, authorities shutdown brothels being run right here in the bay area. paul chambers found out it is part of a large scale prostitution ring that stretch from the south bay to the east bay. >> this building is just one of several bay area residents that was raided yesterday. the district attorney's office says a large scale prostitution ring was operating in six reupbs in three bay area counties. it comes as a surprise to some people because according to the district attorney's office one of them was run out of this building. >> that is surprising to me. i have not heard anything. this neighborhood is pretty quiet. a lot of residents and newer and younger businesses. >> these are hard to identify.

because it looks like a home but in it a lot more is going on. >> reporter: this map shows the city where is 125 law enforcement officers simultaneously served search and arrest warrants in 10 different locations including newark and berkeley. officers were able to arrest eight people for their role in operations along with women from tiawan and china who they believe were prostitutes. >> this this case 10 -- in this case 10 women were identified and all but one were taken into custody. >> those kinds of things uncheckd and if you are not able to get under them can lead to crimes of violence, things that degrade a neighborhood. >> it is san ongoing investigation. the police are looking into another cities in the bay area. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. facebook today raised new speculation that it may go public year.

>> reporter: ready for a new home. for the first time the adoption center is ready for visitors. >> this is the first official kick off where we want to welcome people to come back in and see all of the beautiful cats and then in the future we hope to have more and more dogs. >> reporter: investigators have not figured out what sparked the fire in may of last year. 15 cats died in that fire. and thing was damaged. now, after a lengthy cleanup and repairs the city of berkeley is allowing them to move back in to about a fifth of the building. >> all of this is extensively cleaned and fixed up and and able to dispense all of the medicine. >> a lot of the hard work at the facility to get it up and running has been done by getting the operating room ready. take a look. you can see this one is still dark f. you look over here you can see it is still boarded up. what they need is more money to get this place back up and running at 100%. >> we are still in the planning phase right now, you know, our

initial estimate that we put out there was about $4 million is what the total project would be. >> reporter: the renovations are scheduled to get under way in six to nine months and the plans call for a new sprinkler system to prevent future tragedies in berkeley, ktvu channel 2 news. tomorrow, marking one year since work began on the fourth gore of the tunnel. the crews dug 800 feet into the mountain side from the arend aside. they are a third of the way through with half a mile to go. caltrans says the work needs to be done carefully to cover the risk of explosions. >> there are hydrocarbons in there that we can run into while drilling. it could be released. a spark could ignite them. we must be very, very careful going into this untunnel. >> next month they will dig from the oakland side of the mountain. it will be another year before the two sides meet. well, the pwraord walk is

this weekend? >> approaching the 60s. and the waves have been building. high surf advisories. we will talk about that in just a little bit. the forecast is for tonight. mostly clear. and developing overnight hours. still, more sunshine this weekend. extended forecast. we will hold on to the weather pattern. that is after a cold start tomorrow morning. overnight lows in the upper 30s for santa rose a nap affairfield, livermore, patchyy valley fog first thing on saturday morning. that will be be concerned in the short term with a patchy fog developing. no dense fog advisories. not widespread. it will continue to keep an eye on. high pressure in command of the weather. pushing the storm track way up to the north. a few high clouds could drift over head heading into tomorrow afternoon. as far as the high surf advise or it is in place right now for the entire bay area coastline. the waves will be on the way to 15 to 20 feet. coming out of the west- northwest. be careful any time you are on
